A Lifetime in Chess
An accomplished player, Jonathan is a five-time Irish Over 50 Champion and has been actively involved in promoting and developing chess in Ireland for decades. His passion for the game goes far beyond competition, extending to leadership, governance, and modernization efforts that have benefited the entire Irish chess community.
Proven Leadership
Jonathan served as President of Dublin Chess Club before being elected Chairperson of the Irish Chess Union. He held this position for four consecutive terms (2010–2013), reflecting the confidence and trust that Irish chess stakeholders placed in his leadership and vision.
Driving Modernization
A professional software developer, Jonathan has successfully combined his technical expertise with his commitment to chess. Since 2016, he has been the principal developer of the Irish Chess Union’s website, playing a key role in the digital transformation and modernization of Irish chess administration and communication.
International Experience
In 2022, Jonathan was appointed as an Irish delegate to FIDE, further expanding his contribution to the global chess community and strengthening Ireland’s representation on the international stage.
Beyond Chess
Away from the chessboard, Jonathan enjoys a peaceful life in the Irish countryside with his wife, two cats, and five alpacas—a reminder that strong leadership is often built on balance, perspective, and a grounded approach to life.
