Gunnar has been a driving force behind the success of the Reykjavik Open, helping transform it into one of the most prestigious and internationally recognized tournaments on the global chess calendar.
Since 2010, under his leadership, the tournament has flourished in its iconic venue, Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik, attracting leading players and chess enthusiasts from around the world.
Proven Leadership in Chess Administration
Gunnar served as President of the Icelandic Chess Federation from 2009 to 2025, leading the organization through years of growth and development.
His commitment to Icelandic chess remains as strong as ever. Today, he continues to contribute as Tournament Director of the Reykjavik Open, while also serving as a delegate and CEO, supporting the ongoing advancement of chess at both national and international levels.
A Strong Voice in European Chess
Since 2018, Gunnar has been an active member of the European Chess Union Board, where he currently serves as Vice President.
Throughout his tenure, he has worked closely with federations across Europe, contributing to strategic initiatives and helping shape the future direction of European chess.
International Recognition
Recognized by FIDE as an International Organizer, Gunnar has successfully managed and supported numerous high-level events around the world.
Among his notable achievements was serving as Tournament Director of the FIDE Corporate Championship in Goa, India, an event widely regarded as a major success.

Away from official duties, Gunnar is a devoted family man. He is happily married to Andrea and is the proud father of four sons and grandfather of four grandchildren.
